Why Don’t Atheists Believe in God?

If you've grown up in the church like I have, you might wonder why atheists don't believe in a God that is so clearly there. And why do they argue so strongly against the proof that God exists? When we share the gospel, we need to be prepared to answer any questions or obstacles that will be thrown in our way. So today, I'm going to give you three reasons atheists don't believe in God and how we should counteract them.

1.God Isn't Answering My Prayers.

This is one of the things people commonly say. But really, if they are missing the answer to this, they might not know God as well as they think they do. We can pray to God and implore Him to help us, but sometimes what we think is best for ourselves is not good in the long run. Sometimes they assume He isn't answering because they aren't getting what they think is the right answer. God could be answering with a no, not right now, or that He has a better plan for you. God's will be done, not our own.

"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." 1 John 5:14.

At one point in my life, I wanted something so badly. But God wouldn't give it to me. I struggled against Him for a long time, but when I finally gave myself into God's will, things began to work out. I didn't get what I had asked for, but I got something better. His will for me. Don't let people use unanswered prayers to not believe in God. Most likely, they weren't listening for the reply He gave them, or they didn't like the answer they were given.

2. If God Created Everything, Why Did He Create Evil, and How Could He do That if He is Good?

This question is a good one. A question that can be hard for people to understand. But really, the answer is simple. God could have made us all never do evil and have everything perfect, but would we really want that? We wouldn't have a choice. God wants us to love Him and choose Him, and we couldn't do that if we were forced to be good. Every time we sin, a choice that we willfully make, we are not choosing God or good. The answer is really simple. Where there is good, there is evil. God didn't choose evil, we did.

"And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" Genesis 3:11.

3. God Isn't Real, the Bible is False, and Arguments are Weak.

This is probably the most known statement that atheist use. But what I would ask them is, if God didn't exist, why are they standing in front of me? If they say evolution, ask them if they've ever seen a half man half ape walking around. They will say the Bible has no proof, when they have no proof. They say the big bang is why we are all here? That being true would be like shaking puzzle pieces in a box and expecting them to fit themselves together. This also implies we are all just the highest form of animal. If that is the case, then we would have no sense of good vs evil.

If they say the Bible is false, ask them to prove it to you. Most likely they are either repeating something that they can't prove, or they are misunderstanding something the Bible has said. Either way, that just stresses the importance of knowing your Bible so you can gently explain to them why they are wrong.

This last idea says that the arguments that God exists are weak. You can counteract this the same way as we did the other two statements. Just ask them to prove it. They can't. God was faithful in the past, He is faithful now, and He will be faithful through all of eternity.

Wrap Up

Some people try and come up with excuses on why God doesn't exist because they want to be in control of their own lives. At the end of the day, even if they walk away rejecting God, God can use your conversation to lead them back to Him later in their life. All we can do is plant the seed in their heart and pray for them. God will take care of the rest.

One last thing that you can ask someone who isn't listening to your attempts to share the gospel is this: Why would they not want to believe they can have eternal life? Don't they want that? Then why try so hard to reject it?
