Thank Out of the Box

When I think of thanksgiving, I always think about the food, the family, and giving thanks. Being thankful is the whole point of thanksgiving, but most of the time, I give thanks for things I have. Like my family, my friends, my pets, my technology, my amusements, and my sports. As a Christian, I give thanks to God for all of those things, but sometimes I forget to give thanks for things I cannot physically see. But these things are just as important, and I shouldn’t forget them.

What Do We Give Thanks For?

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 118:1.

If we have the Holy Spirit, we need to remember to give thanks that He dwells so close to us. Thank Him for His strength, kindness, love, grace, and mercy. He is our rock, our protecter, our shield, our healer, our comforter, and so much more. He deserves all the thanks we could ever give Him and more.

“Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the father;” Ephesians 5:25.

Why Should We Give Thanks?

“Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.” Psalm 95:2.

God loved us so much that He sent His son to die for us (John 3:16). This just proves He is so good to us. He didn’t have to give us salvation, but He did because He loved us. We need to thank Him for that, because we could have never saved ourselves, and the wages of sin is death.

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” Hebrews 12:28-29.

“Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp.” Psalm 147:7.

If I don’t remember to thank the Lord, I tend to get consumed with myself. The problems and issues that I have, and I forget all that I do have. This makes God sad, because if we believe that Jesus died and rose for our sins, and try to live like He did, then He gave us the gift of everlasting life and eternal happiness.

Every night, I try to list five things I am thankful for. This helps me keep sight of all I have. I would encourage you to list the things you are thankful for, and then thank God for them. You can also join in on the final weeks of our thankful tree, and we can thank the Lord as a group. If you want to do that, click the button below.

Giving thanks is not about ourselves and what we think we want, but it’s about God and what He has already given us.
