I love to make goals. They help keep me accountable. If... I actually do them. Every year, I get so excited to make new goals. I really love the idea of completing all these great things by the end of the year, but most of the time I get so enthusiastic, my goals get ridiculously impossible. Once, I said I'd find a way to start a zoo by the end of the year. Yep, the streak I was on was unattainable. And when I approached sharing the gospel, I was the same way.
When I first saw someone share the gospel through a conversation, they made it look so easy, I thought I could do it for sure. But I didn't realize at the time that I would have a hard time just walking up to someone. When I learned how to share the gospel, I didn't have anyone coaching me through it. My church does have a program for sharing the gospel, but because of prior commitments, I could never go. So, I had to learn everything by myself. But hopefully you won't have to do that. And if you are reading this right now, you are taking the first step to ensuring that YOU don't end up as lost as I was.
It took me a while to realize that I didn't have to wake up one morning and know how to deliver the gospel message like a pro. First, I had to make sure I fully understood what and why I believed what I do. If you're not exactly sure what the gospel is in full, you can find it on Brave the Battle's home page. After that, the most important step was making sure that I was equipping myself with God's word day after day. These Bible reading allow God to speak through me whenever I am having a gospel conversation with someone.
Probably one of the things I had to work on next, and I still really need to work on is treating others like Jesus would have. And sometimes (especially when you are dealing with horses and cranky girl-scout troop leaders) it can be really hard. But if I am not living out what I believe, when I go to share the gospel, they are not going to believe a word I say about the Bible. If it was so important to me, why don't I live it?
Honestly, I think the prior step is the hardest to do, but from there, you can start dropping gospel tracts anonymously on your neighbor's doorsteps, planting the seed of the gospel in their hearts. Then hand out a gospel tract. Prayer is a good step above that. Start by asking a friend how you can pray for them, then a stranger! As you get more and more comfortable sharing the gospel, you will find God giving you more and more opportunities. You don't have to go out of your way to look for them!
There are many other steps you can take, and it is completely up to you how you get to your goal, but the important thing is that you keep growing in Christ and help others do the same. Below, Reagan (the graphic designer) has created a goal ladder that you can print out and write your step-by-step what you plan to do in order to share the gospel better. I will definitely be doing this, and I hope you will join me!
